Mogli, Ocelot

Mogli was found as a cub in 2017 near the Sooretama Biological Reserve, a federal conservation unit in Espírito Santo state. The intensive care required to save him caused strong habituation to humans and the loss of the hunting skills an ocelot needs to survive alone. He was deemed unfit for reintroduction and now serves as the species' ambassador in environmental education. One detail captures the whole project: the technical report behind the reserve's official recognition lists the ocelot among the species living free in the forest fragment that surrounds it. Mogli cannot return to the forest that begins just outside his enclosure.

Global IUCN assessment from 2014 (the current Red List edition; no more recent global reassessment found). The species is not listed as threatened on Brazil’s national list. The Minas Gerais state list (COPAM 041/95, from 1995) still classifies it as "endangered" — a different geographic scale, not a contradiction: it is exactly what the RPPN’s technical report records for the forest fragment surrounding the reserve.
